Update your summer wardrobe with a $200 gift card from Girl Friday!

I have been shopping at Girl Friday since they opened their first shop on College near Ossington over 10 years ago. That location has since closed and their shop on Queen Street West downtown Toronto remains one of my favourite go-to shops for reasonably priced, fun, colourful, and unique clothing. Owner/designer Rebecca Nixon also makes a line of her own clothing (under the Girl Friday label) and I have purchased several staple pieces over the years. They’re usually classic cuts that can be worn for many years. And, her line of clothing is MADE IN CANADA which is great if you’re looking to support locally-made products. I’m wearing a Girl Friday dress in that Cityline photo (from last summer).

I wear a lot of items from Girl Friday when I am on TV and Rebecca has kindly offered a $200 gift card to the store! The shop is downtown Toronto (so keep this in mind before you enter). Just leave a comment and tell me the piece of clothing you can’t believe you ever bought or wore (I had prized hot pink acid-washed jeans when I was 12).

My power garment, a shiny leopard-print muumuu. I got it for $2 when as vintage shop was closing. It’s a lil too ostentatious for wear outside but it feels so fabulous. Whenever I’m having a bad day I wear it around the house and instantly feel like my best self.

I went through an awful wide-leg velour pant stage at one point in the late 90s. I had a pair in black and teal. Not ok. Never again!

Oh my, where do I begin to describe my horrible childhood outfits? I owned this 5 shades of purple outfit with matching pants and a best/jacket which was at least 2 sizes to big for me but I was such a fan I insisted on wearing it. I was 4. I look at pics now…oh man.

Harem pants – you know the kind MC hammer wore. Somehow I thought these would be flattering for a teenage girl. Wow. Just wow.

For me it would have to be homemade shorts and tank top. My Aunt made them which sounds ok however they were made from pink Loonie Tunes characters. They were so ill fitting. I wore them for a class photo one of my biggest regrets.

Ugh…these Swear orange and white rave platforms when I was 13. Wore them to the movies once. They weighed about 10lbs per shoe and it took me 1/2 hr to walk from where my dad dropped me off in the parking lot to the theatre itself. They went awesome with my rainbow sweatpants.

I had a T-Shirt with a man in a hot dog costume that said “Ask me about my Weiner”. I loved that shirt.

for me it was a pair of neon tights. The left side was neon green and the right side was neon blue! Pick me, pick me! I’ll be coming to Toronto soon!

Forget acid wash – I had fluorescent everything. My best outfit was probably my fluorescent pink sweater accessorized with my fluorescent yellow hip-hugging belt, a fluorescent yellow tie (that I had to get my dad to tie) and fluorescent yellow socks. Top it off with some gummy bracelets and duckie boots. Weren’t the 80’s glam?!?

Bright neon pink shorts with a lime tank top & a ball cap. Was on vacation so it was acceptable…:)

here is a story about the dress that got away!
One day I bought a lovely vintage dress from Kensington market, it was a little baggy but I loved it! The top was a cream colour, the bottom skirt was a red velvet and it had beautiful crystals around the bodice. Anyways, I have no idea where the hell it went to after I moved a couple of times. I always stashed it in my closet and thought I kept it safe. Maybe I went to bring it for alterations and forgot about it! I was very sad to learn I no longer had it – never got to wear it and I especially loved that vintage find! It was a keeper – wonder where it is now?

Hot pink jeans, with leopard shoes. Not my best look to say the least!

For me, it was not only one piece…. Up until I hit 40, my wardrobe had only brown and beige outfits – how sad! now I like colours, in moderation, and girlFriday might be my shop.

I had a pair of oddly patterned red plaid pants that I can’t believe I wore as a teen.

I had a pair of bright orange sweatpants. The wide legged ones. Not the best selection on my part.
